Our Partnership
The Australian Government has partnered with FIBA, through the PacificAus Sports program, since 2024. The partnership aims to support basketball throughout the Pacific, particularly the women’s game, and to provide high-performance pathways and professional development opportunities for women in coaching, officiating and sports administration.
As part of FIBA’s global ‘Women in Basketball’ strategy, the following activities will be delivered across the region:
- WiLEAD - Women in Basketball Leadership Program
- High Performance 3x3 Training and Development
- Women in News and Sport (WINS) Collaboration - Workshop Opportunities to Upskill Women in Basketball Through Media Training, Mentorships, and Scholarships.
Over three years, our partnership is expected to directly benefit more than 1,000 women and girls in the Pacific basketball community.
The Pacific has made a unique contribution to the game of basketball. The athleticism and passion of its players and their Pacific Island heritage are recognised by the basketball community in Australia, New Zealand, and around the world.
Through the FIBA Foundation Basketball For Good Programs, we are focused on working with Pacific Island national federations to nurture and develop their current and emerging talent, with a focus on elevating women in basketball. Programs supported by PacificAus Sports will directly support the next generation of female leaders, athletes, and officials from across the region through WiLEAD, WINS, and High-Performance Camps.
FIBA has consistently supported the participation of Pacific Island nations in regional youth tournaments that serve as qualifiers to various FIBA Asia Cups, FIBA 3x3 events, and global FIBA events. Fiji, Guam, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tahiti, and Tonga men’s and women’s teams have capitalised on these pathways to compete at the highest level. This provides crucial exposure and competitive opportunities for young players from these nations.
